When the temperature drop it’s this vibe of you have to make cornbread and beans. Great northern beans also known as white beans make a delicious ham and bean soup. Usually people go for pinto beans but we love great northern white beans. Here is a recipe for instant pot white bean and ham soup.
This white bean and ham soup is really easy to make in the instant pot. It’s a budget friendly soup and is thick enough to also serve as a side dish at parties and potlucks. Make a bean soup to serve after trick or treating or just hanging out with friends on a fall or winter night.
What I truly love about bean soup is just how simple and budget friendly it is. If you have left over ham or use just want to use bacon the cooked ham can be replaced. White beans don’t just go great with ham but pair well with chicken and beef too.
Pre-soaking The Beans:
In the instant pot you definitely do not need to pre-soak the beans. As you see in the video below the beans are just added and cooked for a longer time. Both on high pressure then let to natural pressure release. If your beans were pre-soaked in advance 30 to 40 minutes high pressure with quick release is perfect!
Spicing The Beans:
White beans can be easily spiced with just about any kind of spice. We prefer paprika and cayenne pepper but majoram or other fresh herbs can be used. For more of a chili flavor chili spices will be used. For a barbecue flavor cook them down then add in sauce.
Make It For Parties
Now and again when we have gatherings I put on a pot of beans and make some corn bread in advance. Once people start having a few drinks it’s a great way to feed people. It makes enough for close to 12 servings. Great for larger groups, potlucks, parties at work, and even thanksgiving dinner sides. I love the instant pot cause I can leave it on the keep warm setting too!

- 1 lb pre cooked ham; diced
- 2 cups great northern white beans; dried not soaked
- 2 1/3 cups water
- 3 tablespoons garlic
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 1/2 cups white onion; diced
- 1 - 28 oz container vegetable broth
- 2 bay leaves
- 2 teaspoons salt
- Cut onion and place into instant pot. Add in washed beans and precooked cut ham.
- Pour in vegetable broth and water.
- Add in garlic, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and bay leaves.
- Give it a good stir. Lock lid and place valve in sealed position.
- Set to high pressure for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Once the instant pot stops counting let it naturally release for 25 minutes then quick release remaining pressure.
- Serve with corn bread. See notes if you have pre soaked beans.
If you have pre soaked beans only cook on high pressure for 40 minutes then quick release. Do not do a natural pressure release.
